Which Necklace for Which Neckline: A Simple Matching Guide

Which necklace for which neckline: the best necklace style and length for V-neck, crew, scoop, sweetheart, strapless, square, boat, halter and turtleneck tops.

The quick rule: a necklace should either echo the shape of the neckline or sit clearly inside or outside it. A V-neck wants a pendant that makes a V. A round scoop wants a curved necklace. A high neckline wants a long chain that hangs well below it. The one thing to avoid is a necklace that lands right at the edge of the fabric, where it fights the seam and looks like an accident.

Here's how that plays out for every common neckline, with lengths so you know exactly what to grab.

V-neck and plunging necklines

A pendant necklace is the classic match because it repeats the V. The pendant should end 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) above the point of the V, so it sits inside the opening. On a standard V-neck that's usually an 18 or 20 inch (46 or 51 cm) chain. Y-shaped lariat necklaces work the same way.

For a deep plunge, layered chains look great since they fill the space without competing. Avoid round, collar-style statement pieces that fight the line of the V.

Crew neck and high round necklines

There are two good options. Wear a long necklace on top of the fabric, at least 24 inches (61 cm), so it hangs clearly below the neckline. Or wear a short bib-style statement necklace that sits on top of the neckline, filling the space above it. A pendant that ends right at the seam of a crew neck is the most common mistake.

Pearls over a crew neck knit are a classic. With a T-shirt crew neck, a 16 inch chain can sit just above the neckline if your neck is long enough to leave a clear gap.

Scoop and sweetheart necklines

A scoop neck follows a curve, so curved necklaces work best: a princess length chain at 17 to 19 inches (43 to 48 cm), a rounded statement necklace, or a strand of pearls. The necklace should sit roughly halfway between the base of your neck and the neckline.

Sweetheart necklines are romantic and already have a lot of shape. A choker or a short pendant at 16 inches (41 cm) is the cleanest option. A delicate chain lets the neckline do the work, which is why it's so popular with wedding dresses.

Strapless, off-the-shoulder and square necklines

These leave the most skin showing, which means the most freedom. A choker, a collar necklace or a statement necklace looks best here since it fills the open space. Strapless dresses pair well with a short pendant or a bold collar piece. Off-the-shoulder tops look great with a choker that frames the collarbone.

A square neckline has straight lines, so you can either echo them with a geometric pendant or contrast them with a round choker or pearls. Both work. Avoid long necklaces that cross the straight edge of the square, since they break the line awkwardly.

One-shoulder tops have a diagonal line that's already the focus, so a necklace usually clutters them. Go for a bold earring instead. Wrap tops and cowl necks drape on their own: a wrap works like a V-neck and takes a pendant, while a cowl looks best with no necklace or a very fine chain that stays above the folds.

Boat neck, halter, turtleneck and collared shirts

A boat neck is wide and high. Often the best choice is no necklace at all, letting earrings do the work. If you want one, go long at 28 to 34 inches (71 to 86 cm) over the fabric. Halter tops have a strong line at the neck, so most stylists skip the necklace and wear statement earrings instead. Chandeliers or bold drops are perfect.

With a turtleneck, a long pendant at 28 to 32 inches (71 to 81 cm) is the go-to, and it makes the outfit look longer and leaner. With a button-down shirt, wear a fine chain or pearls under an open collar at 16 to 18 inches, or a short chain sitting just under the collar points.

Whatever the neckline, check the balance with your earrings. A bold necklace wants small earrings, and a neckline that calls for no necklace is the perfect moment for statement earrings.

Quick neckline cheat sheet

If you just want the answer for getting dressed, here it is. For more on the lengths themselves, see the necklace length guide.

Check it on your actual outfit

Your neck length and the exact cut of a top change everything, so the cheat sheet is a starting point. A good test is to take a photo in the outfit and see the necklace on it before the event. In Lody's jewelry try-on you can upload a photo of yourself in the dress and try a Pendant Necklace, Choker Necklace or Statement Necklace on it. FAQ

What necklace goes with a V-neck?

A pendant or Y-shaped necklace that ends 1 to 2 inches above the point of the V, usually on an 18 or 20 inch chain.

What necklace goes with a crew neck?

A long chain of 24 inches or more worn over the top, or a bib statement necklace that sits above the neckline. Avoid pendants that end right at the seam.

Should you wear a necklace with a halter top?

Usually not. A halter already draws attention to the neck, so statement earrings tend to look better.

What necklace looks good with a strapless dress?

A choker, a collar necklace or a statement necklace. They fill the open space and frame the collarbone.
