Necklace Length Guide: Where Every Length Sits on Your Body
A necklace length guide with every standard size in inches and cm, where each one falls on your body, and how to pick the right length for your neck and outfit.
Most women's necklaces are sold at 18 inches (46 cm), which lands just below the collarbone on an average frame. That's why it's the default. But the right length for you depends on your neck size, your height, your bust and what you're wearing with it, and 2 inches either way changes the whole look.
Below are the standard lengths, where they actually fall, and how to check a length at home before you order. Measurements are for the chain alone. Pendants add their own drop on top of that.
Standard necklace lengths in inches and cm
Jewelers use the same names across most shops, so once you know these you can read any product page. The placement notes assume an average adult woman with a neck of about 13 to 14 inches (33 to 36 cm).
- Collar, 12 to 13 in (30 to 33 cm): sits snug around the middle of the neck, like a band.
- Choker, 14 to 16 in (35 to 41 cm): rests at the base of the neck. 16 inches is the classic choker on most people.
- Princess, 17 to 19 in (43 to 48 cm): lies on or just below the collarbone. This is the everyday range and includes the standard 18 inch chain.
- Matinee, 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm): falls between the collarbone and the top of the bust.
- Opera, 28 to 36 in (71 to 91 cm): reaches the bust or just below. Long enough to double into a two-strand look.
- Rope, 37 in (94 cm) and longer: hangs to the waist or can be wrapped two or three times.
How to measure your ideal necklace length at home
Take a piece of string or a phone charger cable and lay it around your neck the way a necklace would hang, then mark where it meets. Stand in front of a mirror and move the mark until the bottom of the loop lands where you want the piece to sit. Measure the string flat against a ruler or tape. That number is your chain length.
If you already own a necklace you love, measure it end to end with the clasp open. It's the most reliable reference you have, because you already know how it looks on you.
For a choker, measure your neck snugly and add 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm). Without that extra room it'll feel tight every time you swallow.
How your height, neck and bust change where a necklace falls
The same 18 inch chain can sit high on one person and low on another. A neck of 15 or 16 inches (38 to 41 cm) uses up more of the chain, so the necklace lands higher. A slim neck lets it drop further. If your neck is on the larger side, go up one size from the chart, for example 20 inches where the chart suggests 18.
A fuller bust pulls longer chains forward, so matinee and opera lengths can hang at an angle instead of lying flat. Many women with a fuller bust prefer princess lengths, or opera lengths long enough to fall below the bust instead of resting on it.
Height matters too. On a petite frame (around 5'3" or 160 cm and under), a 30 inch chain can reach the waist and look swamped. On someone tall, a 16 inch choker can look a little small. Treat the chart as a starting point and adjust by 2 inches at a time.
Pendant drop: the part people forget
Product listings give the chain length, not the total drop. A pendant with a 1 inch (2.5 cm) bail and charm on an 18 inch chain will visually end around 19 inches. If you want a pendant to land exactly in the dip of your collarbone, choose a chain about 1 inch shorter than you'd pick for a plain chain.
Adjustable chains with extender rings (usually 16 to 18 in or 18 to 20 in) are worth it for pendants. You can move the charm up or down depending on the neckline you're wearing that day.
Matching necklace length to your outfit
The simplest rule: the necklace should sit on skin or clearly on top of fabric, never right at the edge of a neckline where it fights the seam. A princess length works with most open necklines. High necklines like crew necks and turtlenecks look cleaner with a matinee or opera length that sits well below the collar.

Which length to buy if you only buy one
Get an 18 inch chain with a 2 inch extender. It sits on the collarbone with most tops, it holds a small pendant well, and the extender gets you to 20 inches for crew necks. If you already have that, a 16 inch piece is the next most useful, since it pairs with the 18 for an easy two-layer look.

FAQ
What is the most common necklace length for women?
18 inches (46 cm). It sits on or just below the collarbone on most women and works with the widest range of necklines.
Is a 16 or 18 inch necklace better?
16 inches sits at the base of the neck like a loose choker, 18 inches lands on the collarbone. If you have a larger neck or want an easy everyday piece, 18 is the safer choice.
How long should a necklace be for a man versus a woman?
Men's chains usually start at 20 inches (51 cm) and go to 24 inches (61 cm) because neck sizes are larger. Women's chains usually run from 16 to 20 inches for everyday wear.
Where should a 20 inch necklace fall?
A few inches below the collarbone on most women, above the bust. It's a good length for crew necks and higher necklines.
